Year Round Hydrant Maintenance
- Hydrants require clear access year-round.
Maintenance crews work year-round to ensure proper operation and maintenance of hydrants for first responders. - You can help.
AWWU asks residents to adopt a hydrant and shovel around it after snow falls. Residents clearing snow should always maintain a six-foot radius around the fire hydrants. - Fire protection is supplied through both public and private hydrants.
The Utility maintains public hydrants located in the Municipal Rights-of-Way. Private hydrants are generally located on private property and maintained by the property owner, however AWWU will provide winter maintenance checks. All private hydrants are designated with a 900 series number. - Red Top Hydrants can be used for purposes other than fire fighting. Only hydrants with red tops are authorized for water tankers to fill from, for landscaping and/or construction purposes. The Utility issues permits and meters for authorized uses of red top hydrants. It is very important for the Utility to know which hydrants are being used to ensure water quality is maintained.
- Anchorage Municipal Code requires access to fire hydrants must be maintained.
The Municipal Code, 24.50.170, states, “No materials, fence or shed shall obstruct the approach to any fire hydrant…” The fire department shall not be prevented or delayed from gaining immediate access to fire hydrants.
