Your Water System At Work

The Key Box provides access to the underground valve that turns water on and off to a home or business.

  • The Key Box belongs to the Utility and is generally located at the property line.
  • Key Boxes either protrude from the ground or are covered with a cap.

Anchorage’s Water Tariff Rule 6.3 requires customers to keep the Key Box marked and accessible to the Utility at all times:

  • Mark or know the location of the Key Box.
  • Do not bury the Key Box.
  • Remove snow from around the Key Box.
  • Do not place anything near the Key Box which obstructs or hinders access, such as fencing, dog houses or landscaping.
  • Be available to move vehicles parked over the top of the Key Box upon request.

The Utility maintains the service line between the water main and the Key Box.

  •  The Utility also adjusts and makes repairs to damaged Key Boxes.

Customers are responsible for maintenance of the water service extension between the Key Box and their building(s) receiving water service.
