AWWU's single-family residential accounts are billed monthly based on the unmetered residential water and wastewater recurring service rates. AWWU's multi-family residential and commercial accounts are billed monthly based on the metered commercial water and wastewater recurring service rates. The Utility will provide metered service for accessory dwelling units, duplexes, or triplexes upon the request of the customer. The Utility does not provide metered service to residences with only one dwelling unit.
All customer classes are subject to the Regulatory Cost Charge (RCC) which is a surcharge applied to customer billings to pay AWWU’s share of the budget of the Regulatory Commission of Alaska (RCA).

(1) Water and Wastewater Rates were granted by the RCA on an interim and refundable basis, effective February 12, 2024. Water Rates reflect a rate increase of 6.30% for all water customers and Wastewater Rates reflect a rate increase of 3.00% for all sewer customers. The Plant Replacement and Improvement Surcharge Mechanism (PRISM) rate was set to 0.00%.
(2) The RCC rate provided has been approved by the RCA and is effective July 1, 2024. The RCC rate is updated annually by the RCA on July 1st.
(3) The Meter Charge is per meter by meter size. The meters are owned and maintained by AWWU, and are charged depending on the size of the meter installed. Meter sizes range from 5/8 inch up to 8 inches. For a complete list of the Meter Charges please see AWU Tariff Rule 13.2, Schedule B or ASU Tariff Rule 13.8.
(4) The Metered Commercial Wastewater Usage rate is based on the determined wastewater strength by customer. There are three classes of wastewater strength ASU charges for: low, medium, and high. The classes are based on concentration of wastewater product, not quantity.
(5) The Fire Protection Charge has been approved by the RCA effective April 30, 2022. The Fire Protection Charge was approved and implemented to recover the costs related to providing the necessary facilities and fire flow requirements for adequate fire protection purposes.
(6) PRISM is a water and wastewater surcharge approved by the RCA effective January 30, 2023. PRISM is an alternative rate recovery mechanism permitted under Alaska state regulations pursuant to 3 AAC 52 Article 9 to implement a surcharge to recover eligible capital costs associated with plant placed in service between general rate cases.
